The firm’s roots are as G John Smallman founded in the City of London before the First World War.

The firm was bombed out of the City in 1942 and moved to Maidenhead where the firm continued. Mr Mason-Apps and Mr P G Clifton were articled clerks in the mid 1960’s and qualified and became partners at which point they called the firm Smallmans.

Mr Clifton decided to set up Clifton Owen in 1984 in Maidenhead, leaving Mr Mason-Apps with the firm, which already had a branch office in Marlow called Mason-Apps Smallmans & Son. The Marlow office was then closed down and Mr Mason-Apps decided to concentrate on the Maidenhead practice under the name of Mason-Apps Smallmans & Co thereafter.
